How Medicine Waste Is Disposed and Treated

Medical is gotten from the word medicine which is the study and practice of medicine. Medicine consists of the study and research of how to cure diseases in human and animals. Bandages, gloves, scalpels, scissors, injections and other equipment is used in treating illnesses. This equipment is not supposed to be used on more than one patient, therefore, it is thrown away after use. They give rise to medicine waste. Medicine waste is hazardous to the environment and can cause a reoccurrence of infections hence they should be disposed of keenly. Some medicine waste can be treated. Some organizations called medicine waste disposal companies provide specialized services in the treatment and disposal of medicine waste. Below are methods of treating and throwing away medicine waste.

The first method of treating medical waste is chemical treatment. Chemical treatment is done by adding a chemical to medicine waste so as to eradicate all the organisms and bacteria which can’t be seen. Chemicals such as calcium oxide and chlorine are used. The process of treatment leads to the production of some harmful gases, therefore, one should be careful and have protective gear. Use of chemical to treat medicine waste is an on-site process since the waste is treated in areas within the health facilities.

Burying or land disposal is the second method of disposing of medicine waste. Non-risky medicine waste can be put underground or disposed on the land where burning of the waste can be later carried out. Medicine waste which lacks any other method of disposal can be disposed on land or buried. If the decontamination of medicine waste is impossible, a sanitary landfill is applied to keep contamination of water and soil from happening. Injection wells are used in disposing of hazardous liquid medicine waste. This waste is disposed of in special and restricted areas which are only accessed by the authorized and professional people.

The other process of treating medicine waste is autoclaving. This involves the heating and steaming medicine waste equipment at high temperatures so as to kill all the diseases causing microorganisms. A special furnace is used in subjecting the medicine waste to high temperatures. There are different sizes of autoclaving equipment and one should purchase the one that best suits him.

Subjecting medicine waste to radiation is also used in treating medicine waste. Gamma rays which have low wavelengths are used in the irradiation process to bring about sterilization.

Microwave treatment is the other method of treating medicine waste. Microwave treatment is just like irradiation but it uses microwaves to decontaminate medicine waste which has moisture. Moist can be added to dry medicine waste to make the microwave treatment effective.

These are the main ways of disposing and treating medicine waste.
